QAGOMA PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION VISITS GALLERY & MUSEUM

Australian and international photographs spanning 125 years, drawn from the Collection of the Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), will be on display at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum from 23 August until 18 October 2014. The official launch of the exhibition will be held next Friday, 22 August at 5.30pm along with a comprehensive floor talk by the exhibition curator, Sally Foster.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines, explained that the touring exhibition, Ever Present: Photographs from the Queensland Art Gallery Collection 1850–1975, presents more than 30 photographs, including works by unknown nineteenth-century photographers alongside famous images by the twentieth century’s recognised masters. ‘On tour are iconic and intriguing images by Eadweard Muybridge, Walker Evans, Brassai, Max Dupain and Diane Arbus,’ Mr Saines said.

The photographs consist of portraits, images of architecture, travel and landscape, modernity and reportage. Together they suggest the multiple stories that contribute to the history of photography in the pre-digital age.  Along with these, Ever Present also includes a multimedia display of another 50 images from the Queensland Art Gallery Collection, many of which are older works and too fragile to travel.  Photography in rare original books by Walker Evans, Robert Franks, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Brassaï, from the QAGOMA Research Library collection, will also be on display.

The exhibition will be officially launched on Friday by Mr Peter Dougherty, Manager, Gladstone Office, Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Queensland Government.  To celebrate the opening, Sally Foster, Assistant Curator, International Art (Pre 1975), Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art will travel to Gladstone and lead a comprehensive floor talk of the exhibition.  Light refreshments will be provided after the formalities.  If you would like to come along, RSVP to the Gallery & Museum by 5pm Wednesday 20 August on (07) 4976 6766 or email gragm@gladstonerc.qld.gov.au
